DESCRIPTION:Beginning Monday\, October 16 to Friday\, October 20\, the students of District 34 and District 30\, are coming together in conjunction with Character Counts! Week to collect food items for donations to the Northfield Township Food Pantry (2550 Waukegan Rd Suite 100\, Glenview\, IL 60025). Collection boxes will be located at each school. Families may also choose to deliver food or check/cash donations directly to the pantry. \nStuff the Bus collection night on will be on Wednesday\, October 18. Parents\, students and community members can visit us along our route and help us Stuff the Bus for the food pantry and donate new and like-new winter coats\, hats\, scarves\, mittens and gloves for the Glenview Community Winter Wear Drive! \nWhat Should We Give?\nThe Northfield Township Food Pantry has received tremendous community support meeting the needs of our residents. Unfortunately\, there are still significant challenges simply sourcing enough food in appropriate household sizes.\nSome of the most important items that are difficult to stock in sufficient numbers are canned proteins such as tuna\, chicken\, salmon\, beef stew\, pasta with meat i.e. SpaghettiOs\, and beans; soup; rice and pasta mixes and shelf-stable potatoes.

DESCRIPTION:NEW RAIN DATE: Join the 2nd Annual Gelfand Gallop Color Dash on Sunday\, October 1st at Richard E. John’s Park at 2101 Central Road\, Glenview. This fun\, family event is a fundraiser that benefits The Debra Gelfand Children’s Foundation. The Gelfand Gallop is a community run where throughout the course participants get covered from head to toe with vibrant colors made from safe\, food-grade\, biodegradable cornstarch. By the time participants cross the finish line\, they will be covered in a brilliant palette of warm and cool hues. Participants can choose to run either One Mile or Two Miles and there is even a 50 yard mini-dash for children ages five and under! Every participant will receive a t-shirt and a “goodie bag”. If there is inclement weather\, the Gelfand Gallop will take place on Oct. 1\, 2023. \nColor Dash 1 will begin at 8:30am with a one or two mile option. Check in will open at 7:45am. \nColor Dash 2 will begin at 10:30am with a one or two mile option. Check in will open at 9:45am. \nMini Dash will begin at 8:30am just prior to the start of Color Dash 1. This event is for runners ages 5 and under. There will not be a mini dash option at the 10:30am color dash. \nRegister by August 31st to guarantee a t-shirt. DESCRIPTION:In Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal\, Bettina L. Love\, Ph.D. argues forcefully that\, with the release of the 1983 report “A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform\,” Ronald Reagan’s presidency ushered in a War on Black Children\, pathologizing and penalizing them in concert with the War on Drugs. New policies punished schools with policing\, closure\, and loss of funding in the name of reform\, as white savior\, egalitarian efforts increasingly allowed private interests to infiltrate the system. Books will also be on sale. No registration required. \nIn the ever more competitive race to secure the best possible future\, today’s students face unprecedented pressure to succeed. They jam-pack their schedules with AP classes\, fill every waking hour with resume-padding activities\, and even sabotage relationships with friends to “get ahead.” Family incomes and schedules are stretched to the breaking point by tutoring fees and athletic schedules. Yet this drive to optimize performance has only resulted in skyrocketing rates of anxiety\, depression\, and even self-harm in America’s highest achieving schools. Parents\, educators\, and community leaders are facing the same quandary: how can we teach our kids to strive towards excellence without crushing them?
