SUMMARY:[FAN] Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic and What We Can Do About It
DESCRIPTION:Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic and What We Can Do About It\, featuring Jennifer Breheny Wallace and Denise Dubravec. \nThe event will take place at New Trier High School\, Northfield Campus\, Cornog Auditorium\, 7 Happ Rd.\, Northfield\, IL 60093. \nNOTE: First 100 households will receive a free copy of Never Enough. Books will also be on sale. No registration required. \nIn the ever more competitive race to secure the best possible future\, today’s students face unprecedented pressure to succeed. They jam-pack their schedules with AP classes\, fill every waking hour with resume-padding activities\, and even sabotage relationships with friends to “get ahead.” Family incomes and schedules are stretched to the breaking point by tutoring fees and athletic schedules. Yet this drive to optimize performance has only resulted in skyrocketing rates of anxiety\, depression\, and even self-harm in America’s highest achieving schools. Parents\, educators\, and community leaders are facing the same quandary: how can we teach our kids to strive towards excellence without crushing them?

SUMMARY:[FAN] Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal
DESCRIPTION:In Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal\, Bettina L. Love\, Ph.D. argues forcefully that\, with the release of the 1983 report “A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform\,” Ronald Reagan’s presidency ushered in a War on Black Children\, pathologizing and penalizing them in concert with the War on Drugs. New policies punished schools with policing\, closure\, and loss of funding in the name of reform\, as white savior\, egalitarian efforts increasingly allowed private interests to infiltrate the system. These changes implicated children of color\, and Black children in particular\, as low performing\, making it all too easy to turn a blind eye to their disproportionate conviction and incarceration. \nPunished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal\nBettina L. Love\, Ph.D.\nWilliam F. Russell Professor at Teachers College\, Columbia University and author of We Want to Do More Than Survive. \nGanae McAlpin-Toney\nDirector of Equity for Evanston Township High School D202 and the facilitator for the second-year induction program. \nWednesday\, September 27\, 2023\, 7:00 PM (on Zoom)\nRegister: www.bit.ly/LoveFANWebinar\nAND: A book giveaway\, sponsored by FAN!
