SUMMARY:[FAN] Modeling Matters: What Parents Need to Know (and Do) to Decrease Stress\, Worry\, and Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, October 24\, 2023\, 7:00 PM\, Modeling Matters: What Parents Need to Know (and Do) to Decrease\nStress\, Worry\, and Anxiety\, Francis W. Parker School\, Heller Auditorium\, 2233 N. Clark St.\, Chicago\, IL 60614. \nAnxiety and worry are normal and expected parts of learning and growing\, but when children and teens face\nchallenges cognitively\, socially\, or emotionally\, anxiety can step in and take over. Anxiety can be overwhelming\nand rigid\, but it’s also based on predictable patterns that can be shifted once we learn how it operates. \nBased on current research and over 30 years of clinical experience\, Lynn Lyons\, LICSW presents a strategic\napproach based on skill-building\, with prevention the preferred path. The goal? Using creativity\, connection\, and\nenergy\, parents will learn how to increase their child’s flexibility\, support the tolerance of uncertainty\, and\nemotionally and preventatively equip themselves and those they love as we all move forward. \nMs. Lyons travels internationally as a speaker and trainer on the subject of anxiety\, its role in families\, and the\nneed for a preventative approach at home and in schools. She is a sought-after expert\, appearing in the New\nYork Times\, Time\, NPR\, Psychology Today\, Good Morning America\, and other media outlets. Ms. Lyons is a\nfeatured expert in the documentary Anxious Nation. \nWith a special interest in breaking the generational cycle of worry in families\, Ms. Lyons is the author/coauthor\nof several books and articles on anxiety\, including Anxious Kids\, Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry\nCycle and Raise Courageous & Independent Children\, and the companion book for kids\, Playing with Anxiety:\nCasey’s Guide for Teens and Kids. SUMMARY:[FAN] Lucky Me: A Memoir of Changing the Odds
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 13\, 2023\, 7:00 PM\, Lucky Me: A Memoir of Changing the Odds\, Evanston Township High School Auditorium\, 1600 Dodge Ave\, Evanston\, IL 60201. Interviewer: Kevin Warren. BONUS BOOK GIVEAWAY of Lucky Me at the event\, while supplies last. No registration required. \n“The minute I met Rich\, I knew he was different … [He] helped me find my strength. Rich’s superpower isunderstanding what people truly need. So when you flip these pages and witness the kind of pain we feltgrowing up\, don’t flinch. Hard truths make us stronger.”—LeBron James\, from the Foreword to Lucky Me. \nSuper-agent Rich Paul is the CEO and founder of Klutch Sports Group\, one of the most influential and culturally relevant sports agencies in the world. His roster is comprised of a who’s who of professional athletes. He has been both incredibly successful and profoundly disruptive to the world of professional sports. There’s a story about Paul that everyone knows: A twenty-one-year-old kid from Cleveland who sells sports jerseys out of his car meets a high school basketball phenom named LeBron James at an airport—the two become friends and forge a decades-long partnership that reinvents the business of sports. That random meeting might seem like the lucky break that changed Paul’s life. But a moment of good fortune means nothing without the struggle that gets you there and the lessons you carry with you to the other side. \nLucky Me: A Memoir of Changing the Odds is a memoir of an extraordinary journey told in Paul’s blunt\, philosophical style. How did Paul grow into an individual capable of changing an American institution like the NBA? How did he become so disruptive to traditional power structures that the NCAA tried to bar his entry to the league by implementing a rule requiring that agents have college degrees\, which many dubbed the “Rich Paul Rule?” Lucky Me starts by charting how Rich became a gambler at an early age—his fast mind and gift for finding an edge made him a devastating dice roller who could hold his own with grown men\, win big\, and walk away alive. Shooting dice wasn’t just a pastime; it was a way to earn money for his family as his mother struggled under the weight of drug addiction. Paul dreamed of becoming a star athlete\, but the streets were where he\nthrived\, building a lucrative enterprise on shaky ground. When he found himself at a dangerous crossroads\, he summoned the teachings of his past to create a different future. \nMr. Paul will be in conversation with Kevin Warren\, President and CEO of the Chicago Bears\, the first Black President and CEO in Club history and the first President and CEO hired from outside the organization. A veteran executive of 21 years in the NFL\, Warren joined the Bears after spending the last three years as Commissioner of the Big Ten Conference. \nThis event is suitable for youth 12+. It will be recorded but not live streamed and will be available on FAN’s website and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:[FAN] Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal
DESCRIPTION:In Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal\, Bettina L. Love\, Ph.D. argues forcefully that\, with the release of the 1983 report “A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform\,” Ronald Reagan’s presidency ushered in a War on Black Children\, pathologizing and penalizing them in concert with the War on Drugs. New policies punished schools with policing\, closure\, and loss of funding in the name of reform\, as white savior\, egalitarian efforts increasingly allowed private interests to infiltrate the system. These changes implicated children of color\, and Black children in particular\, as low performing\, making it all too easy to turn a blind eye to their disproportionate conviction and incarceration. \nPunished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal\nBettina L. Love\, Ph.D.\nWilliam F. Russell Professor at Teachers College\, Columbia University and author of We Want to Do More Than Survive. \nGanae McAlpin-Toney\nDirector of Equity for Evanston Township High School D202 and the facilitator for the second-year induction program. \nWednesday\, September 27\, 2023\, 7:00 PM (on Zoom)\nRegister: www.bit.ly/LoveFANWebinar\nAND: A book giveaway\, sponsored by FAN! SUMMARY:[FAN] Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic and What We Can Do About It
DESCRIPTION:Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic and What We Can Do About It\, featuring Jennifer Breheny Wallace and Denise Dubravec. \nThe event will take place at New Trier High School\, Northfield Campus\, Cornog Auditorium\, 7 Happ Rd.\, Northfield\, IL 60093. \nNOTE: First 100 households will receive a free copy of Never Enough. Books will also be on sale. No registration required. \nIn the ever more competitive race to secure the best possible future\, today’s students face unprecedented pressure to succeed. They jam-pack their schedules with AP classes\, fill every waking hour with resume-padding activities\, and even sabotage relationships with friends to “get ahead.” Family incomes and schedules are stretched to the breaking point by tutoring fees and athletic schedules. Yet this drive to optimize performance has only resulted in skyrocketing rates of anxiety\, depression\, and even self-harm in America’s highest achieving schools. Parents\, educators\, and community leaders are facing the same quandary: how can we teach our kids to strive towards excellence without crushing them?
