Karen Cloyd, LCPC, is a is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and holds a Master's of Education in Community Counseling from Loyola University Chicago. Karen has 20+ years of experience as an outpatient therapist, and brings with her extensive training and clinical experience working with trauma survivors and providing crisis support. Karen joined FSC as a full-time clinician in 2020, and was promoted to Senior Clinician in 2022. Karen’s practice is grounded in the belief that a secure space - affirming of varying and overlapping identities, promoting of self-empowerment, and conscious of cultural, structural, and societal factors that influence mental health - is a cornerstone for growth and healing. Compassionate and unconventional, Karen collaborates with clients to create a path toward healing that is unique to their strengths, goals, and lived experience. Using an eclectic approach, Karen tends to lean heavily into trauma-informed psychotherapy/trauma theory, mindfulness, expressive and sensorimotor therapies, and attachment theory. Karen incorporates elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Positive Psychology. Karen has completed EMDR basic training and is participating in consultation toward EMDR Certification. Additionally, Karen coordinates FSC’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling Internship program, supervises/mentors new professionals, and is one of FSC’s mental health tech nerds.
